Geologic hydrogen resources

Submissions now open

Deadline: 01 May 2026

This themed collection aims to update recent developments in Geologic Hydrogen Resources understanding. The collection explores a variety of fields including but not limited to the sustainable production, utilization and storage for a Net-Zero economy of Geologic Hydrogen.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • White-hydrogen exploration and recovery
  • Multiscale geophysical and geochemical site characterization
  • Modelling that forecast long-term producibility and sustainability
  • Underground hydrogen storage
  • Governing processes in salt caverns, saline aquifers, and depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, with focus on well integrity, high-fidelity reservoir simulation techniques, microbial interactions, and continuous monitoring under large-scale, cyclic operating regimes
  • Hydrogen transportation, such as pathways, infrastructure and chemical carriers and their safety, cost integration etc.
  • Socio-economic and policy analysis, such as techno-economic and life-cycle assessments, benchmarks geologic hydrogen against green and blue alternatives, and examines market incentives, regulatory frameworks, and stakeholder engagement to enable equitable, resilient deployment of geological hydrogen value chains.
