Micropipette dropping liquid into test tubes

This classroom-based course covers all the practical theory about columns, detectors and mass spectrometers for HPLC and LC-MS.

This course is packed full of examples and practical tips, makes full use of props (instrument parts and consumables which are handled and used for demonstration purposes), includes questions throughout the course and a Q&A session at the end of the day.

The course starts by explaining the LC system classifications. Following this, the analytical columns used in liquid chromatography are covered in great detail, examining the process and the chemistry of separation.

The course reviews the types of detectors used in liquid chromatography, both universal and selective and their capabilities in terms of sensitivity and linear dynamic ranges covering Ultra Violet/ Visible absorbance (UV-Vis), Fluorescence (FL), Refractive Index (RI) and Photo Diode Array absorbance (PDA or DAD) detectors.

The course looks at mass spectrometry detection and the principles and components of the system including the vacuum, atmospheric pressure inlets, various ionisation techniques, mass analysers and tandem mass spectrometry.

The final section covers targeted or non-targeted analysis and some of the considerations and applications for each.

Prerequisites

This course is for those who have a basic knowledge of liquid chromatography and would like to greatly enhance it. Beginners should attend our Absolute Basics of HPLC & LC-MS course first.

Additional information

Includes: lunch and refreshments; hard copy of the training manual in colour; certificate of attendance; ability to ask questions and discuss own problems.
